Adding a Piece of Foam to the Top of the Ottoman

January 23rd, 2011 by admin No comments »

The next step of making the ottoman was to buy a piece foam and to place it at the top of the box.  I bought this piece from Clark Rubber here in Australia and I have to say it was probably the most expensive bit I bought.  For a high density 5cm thick 900mm by 450mm piece of foam it cost me $30.

To stick the foam on the ottoman, I used a spray on glue called ‘Spray and Stick’ by Bostik that I bought from Bunnings.  To use it all you have to do is spray the glue on both surfaces to be joined, wait for a few mintues and then place them together.  It should look like this when done.

Dimensions of Ottoman

January 18th, 2011 by admin No comments »

The following diagram shows what dimensions I used to make my ottoman. The main reason I used 900 x 450mm panels for the top and bottom was that they sold these sheets pre-cut at Bunnings (my local hard ware store).  The boards that I used were made from MDF and were 16mm thick.

All in all I needed the following panels cut to make the ottoman:

  • Top Lid – 1 x (900 x 450mm), 2 x (450 x 150mm), 2 x (868 x 150mm)
  • Bottom half – 1 x (900 x 450mm), 2 x (450 x 250mm), 2 x (868 x 250mm)

You can cut these dimensions yourself or do what I did to save time and get Bunnings to cut them for you. They charged 50 cents per cut. Make sure they cut it right though because they didn’t for me and I had to spend a lot of time re-cutting some boards!

Also, I got 2 4mm thick boards that were cut to 416 x 866mm. I will show what these boards are used for later.

Assembling the Ottoman Box

January 15th, 2011 by admin No comments »

After going to Bunnings and getting the MDF boards cut to the dimensions as shown in the previous blog post, I started to make the box by screwing the boards together.  I used screws that were 2.5cm long with a 70mm butt.  I would recommend that you drill a pilot hole say 30mm in diameter before screwing the screws in to prevent the board from splitting.  This is what your box should look like.

If you want you can chisel away at the board to insert the butt hinges that will be used later to aid in opening the box. Here I have started them 20cm from the edges.  This bit is not neccessary unless you want the hinge to be flush with the MDF panel.

Placing Wadding Around The Ottoman Box

January 14th, 2011 by admin 1 comment »

The next step of the ottoman process involved placing wadding around the outside of the ottoman.  This provides some soft cushioning around the box.  The wadding I bought from Clark rubber was around $10 a sqaure metre.  Make sure you buy enough of it.  Cut the wadding to size and stick it to the box by using a staple gun.  Staple the wadding to the box a few centimetres from the edge like this:

Upholstering The Ottoman

The next step is to upholster the ottoman using your preferred fabric.  The fabric I used was some left over fabric that I used to upholster my pelmets at home.  Make sure you buy enough to cover your ottoman.  Start by upholstering the top section of the ottoman by placing the top of it on the fabric.  Using a staple gun staple the fabric down on the inside of the top box as shown here.  Continue this all around and tuck the fabric at the edges on oppsite sides to give a nice upholstered look.

You will need to cut out fabric at the inner corners so that you can staple the fabric down flat.

Do the same to the bottom of the ottoman but do not worry about covering the bottom of it.  Start by stapling one edge of the ottoman and wrap the fabric around it.  Staple the inside of it as before and then the bottom.  Using some black felt fabric, cut it a little smaller than the base and staple it as shown below.

Placing Boards Inside the Ottoman

December 4th, 2010 by admin No comments »

Remember the 2 boards that I bought? Well here is what they are used for.  They help to conseal the insides of the ottoman nicely and also pull the fabric around the ottoman more tightly.

Cover them with your desired fabric. For the bottom of the ottoman I used the same material as used on the outside.  Cut out enough fabric to cover the board and hold it in place using masking tape.  You can use glue if you want.  It should look like this.

Place the covered board inside the ottoman and force it down as shown here.

Do the same for the top of the ottoman. Here I used black felt simply beacuse I ran out of fabric.

The Last Step – Adding Hinges

November 30th, 2010 by admin No comments »

The last step is to place the hinges on the ottoman.  Place the ottoman on its side and screw the hinges on to your desired location (or locate the grooves that you chiseled in the previous step and screw the hinges on).  It shoud look like this.

Place the ottoman down and open it up and lean it against a wall.  You will need to cut two pieces of ribbon in the same length and staple them as follows.  This will stop the lid from over opening and possibly breaking off.

How to Make an Ottoman

November 20th, 2010 by admin 7 comments »

Welcome to how-to-make-an-ottoman.com. If your thinking of making one you have come to the right website. My name is Tom and I will show you how I made my very own storage ottoman for under $100.  You can probably do it cheaper depending on what style ottoman you want and what materials you use.  Just treat this site as a guide.

Just to let you know I have very minimal woodworking skills so if I can do it you should be able to as well, however any work you do by yourself, just remember you do at your own risk!

This is a picture of the ottoman I made and the one that I will be showing you how to make.
